Is Mental Health a Basic Need or a Self Actualisation Need?

post-featured-image

Your basic needs are food, clothing, and shelter. Oh yeah and the internet too. Self-Actualisation state occurs when you don’t have to worry about basics. Meaning ‘You Probably are living a comfortable life!’ (Just Google Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.)

Now, When you are in a happy state of mind, free from worry you notice that:

  • Work is not hard, In fact, you look forward to challenging work.
  • It’s easy to handle cranky children.
  • Let go of the person who nicked you in traffic.
  • Are able to have a healthy discussion with a colleague or boss without feeling offended.

Counter that when you are low and down –

  • You wake up groggy.
  • Do your chores mechanically.
  • You feel lethargic when working.
  • You feel fatigued sooner.
  • You feel sad often.

The sheer effort is so much higher. The same set of activities when done without stress in a happy state of mind, are easy peasy.

Don’t be fooled and think mental health is only for the rich.

Mental health is a basic need without which you will always struggle to go up the Hierarchy. (Whether Maslow’s or Life).

Taking care of your mental health It’s easier than going to the gym and even free.
